🌍 A Traditional Slovenian Hive Design
Interest in the Slovenian AZ hive has grown worldwide thanks to its compact structure and ergonomic design. Instead of lifting supers, the beekeeper works from the rear of the hive, reducing physical strain and minimizing disturbance to the bees.
In Slovenia, AZ hives are traditionally kept inside bee houses — protective structures that shield colonies from wind, sun, and sudden weather changes while helping maintain a stable internal environment.
🌲 How the 3-Story AZ Hive Works
This hive consists of three sections, separated by a queen excluder:
• Lower section — brood chamber with the queen
• Upper sections — honey storage areas
Each level has its own entrance, allowing flexible colony management depending on strength and seasonal conditions.
When the rear door is opened, frame end bars become visible and frames slide out horizontally like books from a shelf. Proper bee space is maintained through a slotted rack system at the front and removable back panel.
The frames rest on crosswise metal rods, allowing smooth handling and minimal wear.
